blooming magnolia flowers on stack of books

I read a lot. Like, a lot, a lot. I used to only read nonfiction books, but over the last two years, I’ve really gotten into audiobooks for my extra-long commutes. The problem for me is that I can’t follow a story as well when I’m listening to it. I need to actually see the words on the page/Kindle screen.

I started listening to nonfiction books on my commutes and walks and have never looked back. I literally read three times more books per year now that I listen to audiobooks. And yes, audiobooks count as reading. I’ve learned about everything from the women who got radium poisoning to how to fit joy into your day. Here’s a roundup of my favorite self-improvement books that have had nuggets of wisdom that I’ve used in my own life.

Favorite Self-Improvement Books

But What Will People Say?

Growing up in an immigrant household among people who were not growing up in the same type of household was a challenging. My norm was never their norm. This book made me feel seen. Who knew that so many other people lived in households with the same family obligations regardless of the immigrant background. My Colombian/Middle Eastern household wasn’t much different than the author’s Southeast Asian household. Who knew!

The Year of Yes

I know I already recommended this book, but it was so refreshing to hear someone so successful share their challenges with putting themselves out there. It definitely made me more aware of my “nos” and made me want to say “yes” more.

The Perfectionist’s Guide to Losing Control

This one hit home for sure. I am still a work in progress, but am working hard to let go of my perfectionist ways.

Microjoys: Finding Hope (Especially) When Life is Not OK

Life is lived in the small moments, and this book was a wonderful reminder of that.

Happy Mind Happy Life

Thanks to this book, I’ve started visiting the local bagel shop regularly. I also try to compliment people I randomly see, and make small talk with cashiers – it’s good for us! And, most impactful, I finally joined the local women’s club that I had been cyber-stalking since I moved to town. It’s all about building human connections.

168 Hours: You Have More Time Than You Think

Did you know that you have 168 hours to fill each week? Why does it seem that there’s never time, when we actually have a lot of time. Setting aside 20 minutes for a walk doesn’t feel that overwhelming when I consider that I have at least 14 awake hours. Putting yourself – and fun – on your calendar before the week begins means that you’ll always make time for them.

Likeable Badass: How Women Get the Success They Deserve

Being a woman in the professional world – or even the PTA world – can be tough. We’re either too aggressive or too nice. Finding that line between getting people to like you and respect you can be difficult. This book helps with that.

The Book of Alchemy

I don’t really journal. This book inspired me with some fantastic prompts, and essays. I also enjoyed the author’s perspective on life, as someone who has had frequent health challenges.

Tiny Experiments

I loved her practical advice on how to establish a new habit. It isn’t rocket science, but her strategy for creating and following through on goals has altered how I try to set up new habits. I even ended up subscribing to her newsletter to continue getting inspired.
